It´s no coincidence that many of the biggest brands on mobile and web are investing in open web standards like HTML5. We are seeing better and more advanced HTML5 applications every day. Today’s distribution of mobile apps is highly concentrated in Apple’s iTunes App Store, in time this will change, and a variety of strong app store contenders will emerge with the ability to distribute and monetize apps.
Teams Uai! and Estacione-me won the Unicamp Challenge Workshop occurred from April 9 to 16 at the university. The event was organized by Inova Unicamp and Campinas Startups, an institution founded to represent the startups of the Campinas Metropolitan Area (RMC).
Several Venture Capitalists (VCs) from Silicon Valley claim that most of their return on investments occurs in a radius of approximately 50 miles around Stanford, where one can find the most exciting and active innovation ecosystem in the world. Similarly, the area around Unicamp (State University of Campinas) in São Paulo State/Brazil has been increasingly becoming a complex and rich innovation ecosystem.
This technological and innovation ecosystem started to be built decades ago, transforming this area in a traditional technology hub in the country. But, in the last months the ecosystem started to evolve faster and faster in a synchronized movement, involving the most different and complementary players.
Some of the elements compounding this emerging ecosystem are listed below.
The Alumni Unicamp Portal was officially launched on April 12, 2011 and it is an initiative of Unicamp’s PRG, SAE and CCUEC, Inova Unicamp and Ujima, a Softex incubated startup.
Unicamp Ventures is a group of entrepreneurs somehow related to Unicamp. The community embraces from pre-incubated startups to successful established companies and uses a private social network to connect the members. The mentoring program selected about 50 high potential startups for the 2011 edition.
